Creation (1994)

Call was formed in 1994 by Xulfi, Omer Pervaiz, Khurram Jabbar Khan and Danish Jabbar Khan. They started out by providing background music for mime performances at NCA, Lahore under the name Undrap Nexus. Undrap Nexus' line-up was with Xulfi on the keyboard, Omer Pervaiz on the guitar and Danish Jabbar Khan on vocals. Soon, Xulfi and Danish Jabbar Khan, Khurram Jabbar Khan bought himself a drumkit and Call was officially formed. Call still needed a bassist and recruited Shahzad Hameed.

Early History (1994-2000)

Call's musical inspirations included bands like Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and Iron Maiden. Their musical style was experimental as Shahzad Hameed stated;

Playing in the garage and just jamming and doing strange sounds and sometimes real weird sounding things was fun, we were experimental band -we were all naive... And we were doing music truly as a unit we were passionate about whatever strange sounds we were making... The live sound and show was our main concern plus, the live show of call was a theatrical / musical experience - Danish being the art student and the true rebel of the band brought in these influences...

The band's first gig was in 1995. The site was decorated with flame torches and complimenting the band's music were live mime performances. Their setlist was composed of 10 original tracks, a rare thing for underground musicians to do back then. However, in 1996, the band's bassist, Shahzad Hameed left. After a while, the band's guitarist, Omer Pervaiz left as well in order to concentrate on his solo project, Naqsh. Xulfi and Khurram Jabbar Khan decided against disbanding the band and thus ended up recruiting Ahsan Fida Khan on guitars and Faisal Murtaza on bass.

Jilawatan (2005)

Now that the band’s line-up was stable, Call started recording their debut album, Jilawatan. The album was finally released in November 2005 and immediately topped the Vibes charts and stayed there for a lengthy amount of time. The album release was accompanied by a single titled Sab Bhula Kai. A video was released with the single and was directed by Sohail Javed. The single topped the charts and fared extremely well.

A while later two more singles were released, both of which were accompanied by videos. The singles, titled Kuch Naheen and Bichar Kai Bhee, both topped the charts.

Jal The Band: Intro

Jal-An Urdu word of Persian origin which simply means ‘water.’ An element that constitutes of 70% of our being, and more than 2/3rd of the earth. The inspiration behind the band’s name affirms the intimate connection of water to the rhythms of our lives-and how it is something to be celebrated, revered, and preserved for all times to come. The name ‘Jal’ is the product of the band’s vision to recognize Music as the artistic extension of this natural unity. Water is truly one of the most sacred parts of our existence and the band’s music celebrates that concept by orchestrating a symphony of lyrics and music that is as limitless and timeless as itself. The result was Jal-the band; which is a collaboration between three exceedingly gifted individuals; Gohar Mumtaz, Farhan Saeed and Shazi. The oft-quoted statement that "Music is the universal language of mankind” holds particularly true when it comes to Jal’s music. Their Music like water itself knows no exceptions, and boundaries. It aims to cater to people from all spheres of life and of all ages.

Jal-The Music:
Jal’s sound primarily falls in the pop/soft rock genre. Playing along the lines of Latin-Acoustic Guitars; the main emphasis of their music is on the melodies and the lyrical content. Keeping their songs melodious and catchy at the same time the band believes that music is truly the world’s universal language capable of bringing our hearts and souls together. A well composed song, personified with honest and heart felt lyrics and spirited rhythms, will eventually be heard by music enthusiasts all around the world. Owing to its universal appeal Jal’s lyrics’ are a subtle manifestation of emotions expressed in an energetic and harmonious manner. Fueled by the desire to freshen up the pop/rock genre in Pakistan these qualities give Jal’s music a very high degree of accessibility both in terms of composition and lyrics.

Jal The Band - History [Biography]

Jal was formed in Lahore in 2002 when Goher Mumtaz composed his first song by the name of “Aadat.” Soon after, began his search for like minded musicians to complete his band. He ran into Shazi (Aamir) – a Bass guitarist and after a few jamming sessions he invited Shazi to join Jal, and together they went about looking for a vocalist. It was then that Sultan Raja (Bassist of Call) introduced Farhan Saeed Butt to Gohar and thus Jal found a voice. The music video directed by Umer Anwar the single burst into the Pakistani music scene and took it by storm. Receiving an amazing amount of air time by all the music channels and entering music charts. The video was rated 4th best Video of the year 2004 by ARY –The Musik within days of its release. The success of the “Aadat” can partly be gauged by the countless concert offers the band received immediately after the release of the song and partly by it’s ratting to date on music channels.

Early life

Zafar was born in Lahore, Pakistan to two professors at the University of the Punjab in 1980. He attended the C.A.A. Public School and the Beaconhouse Defence Campus. He graduated from the National College of Arts as a painter in 2002.

Music career

Ali Zafar made his debut as a musician with the album Huqa Pani, released in Pakistan in 2003 and worldwide in 2005. It was described by The Hindu as “take a Kishore Kumar-like voice , club it with yuppie Ibiza-ish electronic beats, and add a bit of nostalgic lyrics”.[4] The comparison to Kishore Kumar has been frequently made: in one interview Zafar, asked about the vocal resemblance, remarked “you’re the lucky hundredth person to tell me that”.[5]

The album was a hit, selling over five hundred thousand copies worldwide and winning the ‘Best Album’ category at the Lux Style Awards in 2004. In addition to the album’s popularity being reflected in the shops and by critics, it has been widely claimed that Himesh Reshammiya plagiarised one of the most well-known tracks from the album, Rangeen, for the song Dillagi Mein Jo Beet Jaaye. Soon Pritam too copied his track Channo Ki as Choreen ki Baatein(Fightclub).

Ali Zafar launched his second album “Masty” nationwide in Pakistan in November 2006. He has since released four tracks from the album called “Masty”, “Sajania”, “Dekha” and “Aasman”. A press conference for the release of the album was held in Lahore. The album has been released by Fire Records.

Ali Zafar released his second album “Masty” in India in February 2007. The album contains two additional remix tracks and has been launched by “FrankFinn Records”.

Ali recently released his third and long awaited single, “Dekha”, off his second album, which is a massive hit all over Pakistan. It is shot in Malaysia, produced by the Lux Company, and has the famous Pakistani actresses/models, Reema Khan, Meera, and Amina Haq, starring in it. Ali Zafar, in an interview regarding this video, said that this has to be his most expensive video yet.

Ali Zafar’s recent 2007 Canadian tour turned out to be the most successful Pakistani shows in history of the cities.

My first ever girlfriend

Last three days were totally dedicated to my first ever girl friend. I spent most of the time with her recollecting memories of the days and nights we’d spent together. The passion we’d shared. Reminded me of the time when we were so engrossed into each other that the world would seem non-existent. I remember she’d shared my distress and my joy with me like no one else then and she’d shown me ways about myself that I would not have found alone. She was perhaps the only one who would make me express myself the way I wanted to…. granted me total freedom. So much so that she would even let me flirt around with others like her who would allow me means to reach my higher self. Her only condition was that I must be truthful to my emotion and give my best.

Years went by and we gave each other a lot but following the male nature, I wanted to move on .We broke up in 2003 . I pursued a more glamorous, popular and entertaining girl but stuck to my promise of being truthful to my emotion and gave her my best. She liked me back and we started to date. But even during my time with my new found love, I did miss her time to time. I think she did too but she was beyond all norms and her love for me was unconditional. I knew she would wait for me and she did.

I finally got to meet her two days back, at a new gallery that’s opened by Sanam Taseer in Lahore called ‘ The drawing room ‘. She was all over the place. I felt a part of me had revived after a long time. She was surrounded by admirers of her beauty . She spoke to everyone. I went and stood right in front of her and looked straight to her. And so she spoke to me. She spoke to me in words indescribable, with meanings unfathomable. And so they call her “Art “. I call her “The self “.

I continued to see her for the next two days at the final display of N.C.A thesis. She was drawn by many and had once again drawn many to her. I am once again drawn to her. I hope my glamorous girl friend that they call “ Music ‘ lets me flirt a little with my ‘ SELF ‘.

Pakistani Rock Band Roxen cancels album release in India, Pakistan post Mumbai attack !!!!!

Roxen, Pakistan’s leading rock band, has delayed the launch of their much-awaited album in India in the light of the recent attacks on Mumbai.

Roxen, currently signed with an Indian audio label, had lined up the release of their debut album in India on December 15. It is said that the album features the original rock version of the successful ‘Tera Mera Rishta Purana‘ track from Mukesh Bhatt’s 2007 release, Awarapan.

The band was scheduled to fly to Mumbai for the promotion of the release and concurrently work on some film assignments that they have reportedly signed up.

The band’s lead vocalist, Mustafa Zahid (’Tera Mera Rishta‘ / ‘To Phir Aao‘), revealed, “It’s not the right time for us to release an album knowing what India has gone through. I would love to take my band across cities in India to do a Peace show and involve members of the film and music community from India with whom I have worked with in the past but that seems difficult at the moment. Therefore, we have delayed the release of the album in India and Pakistan and will announce a re-scheduled date very soon.”

He added, “I would like to add that it’s not the nations that hate each other but certain political faces and agencies. Terrorists have no religion and it’s sad for them to think that jannat is a result of jihad.” On a lighter note, he added, “Time is the best healer. Everything will be fine, as both the countries have a purana rishta with each other!”
